This Deluxe Old Club Staunton
chess set originates from the one offered by Jaques of London years ago. A
traditional Staunton design in every respect, this chess set has become a
standard that nearly every chess set manufacturer attempts to emulate. The
Deluxe Old Club is often displayed on the front cover of chess books and has
been used for countless plastic chess set models because of its popularity
with players.
This
is a tournament size chess set with a 3.75" tall king that features a large
formee cross. Pieces have a straight cut base and are heavily weighted for
stability on the chess board. The king, queen, and bishops have columns with
proportionate width and a graceful curve. The queen's crown is turned to the
ideal thickness and has 9 sharp points that are perfectly spaced. The bishop
has an unusually large round miter that is unique to this set. The knights are
stout and heavy with simple detail that looks perfect for this set. The rooks
are average height but have a very tall parapet with deep cut crenels. The
pawns have tapered collars and large, oversize heads.
The
colors of the rosewood vary from orange to dark burgundy and together enhance
the beautiful patterns in the wood grain. The boxwood is beautifully grained
and with the ideal medium amber color. Pieces have green billiard cloth pads
that are ideal for sliding pieces on the board. Two extra queens are included
for pawn promotion. The chess set comes packaged in our attractive black and
gold foil gift box. (*Does
not include chess board).
King base width is 1.625" and weighs 2.60
oz.
